Chickens Galore!

Le Tour de Coup

Cody has been loving his new job at Old Mill Feed and Garden. Since he has started working there, we have been more aware of the social happenings in the farming community. We were very excited to hear that last weekend was the 2013 Monmouth/Independence Chicken Coup Tour. What an adventure!

For those of you that have never experienced a coup tour, it is a wonderful way to spend a morning. You not only get to gawk at the creativity and ingenuity put into these chicken homes, but it is also a very social event. The people you will meet are no typical chicken owners...they take it to another level. For example: Level-'I sleep with my chickens.' Don't believe me? In the pictures below you will see the personally designed cloth chicken diapers she uses to make her chicks more hygiene friendly.

One of our favorite stops was the farthest out of town at Dancing Oaks Nursery.

After a hot day of Coup exploring we talked about the chance of getting our own layers. Before we knew it, we began spending our evenings gutting out a shed and transforming it into our very own coup!!!

A coworker of Codys happen to have some hens that he was graciously willing to gift us! When our coup was complete, we brought home the girls!

Unexpectedly, the next day, we welcomed our seventh member...Quazie. Poor little Haunch-Back isn't very popular with the others, it is a situation worthy of being a childrens book.

The next day believe it or not, we had not one, not two, but THREE eggs!! We have continued to get three to four a day ever since.

We love having Chickens...but they wont be sleeping with us anytime soon!

An Updated Update

Excitement and terror. Those two feelings were playing a heated game of Tug o’ war on my uncertain state of mind. Then, they met up with thankfulness and guilt, for a round of doubles. We were leaving the NICU. Why the battle of emotions? Here is the current update on Annette, Charlotte, and the rest of us Prescotts.  No more goodbyes and counting the days until we will see the boys next; this week we got to go home! It happened so fast. During the weekend we trained how to insert and maintain Charlotte's NG tube on our own, and then, badda-bing, badda-boom, we were discharged! We gathered our belongings and walked straight out the door with baby girls in tow, just as I had imagined it from inside alcove #3553, for 47 days. It would have been all sunshine and roses too, if not for the previous day. The baby didn't make it. I didn’t need to see the blotchy cheeks and tear-stained faces of family members to put it together; in the NICU you just listen to the beeps. Dings a...
