When I had Easton, I think he zapped such a large amount of calcium from my bones that my fingers shrunk. I have no medical knowledge to support this claim, but for whatever reason, all ten digits are significantly more slim. While I have no objection to daintier, more feminine hands, it does pose one problem: my wedding ring no longer fits.
For awhile I tried wearing it regardless; but the first time I enthusiastically told a story, using my hands to talk, that circular symbol of unity went soaring.
Cody inspected the situation and concluded that, yep, he would need to take it to get re-sized. He planned to visit the jeweler in Portland right away. I set my beautiful sparkly band, so familiar to my left ring finger, in it's little box for safe keeping. 'He won't be gone long,' I comforted my now naked ,tan-lined finger. Eight months later....
Not wearing my wedding ring wasn't doing it for me. First off, I got hit on several times by some creepy guys and secondly, my hand was lonely. Friends would ask, "Hey, where's your ring?" And I'd have to scold them on bringing up sensitive topics.
Last week I busted out my old friend and finger companion. It felt so right. To prevent it from taking another flight mid-story, I reinforced it by putting on the slightly smaller ring that I wore B.C. (Before Cody).
This other ring, my mom had bought me at the Washington Family Ranch. Simple and silver, it has 'Jesus' engraved on the top. It actually isn't smaller but just bent from when my hand smacked the car door in my first auto accident. But that's another story.
This ring I used to call my 'promise' ring. Jesus was God's fulfillment of His promise to us: saving us from our sin. Jesus=promise...Jesus on the ring..'promise ring'- you get the connection.
So, are you getting this visual? I've got my ring, too big, yet the beloved representative of my marriage settled above my knuckle and, holding it in place, my Jesus ring.
Aside from the practicality of this situation, I can't help but smile when I look down and see symbolism. God, in His wonderful way, is reminding me of how He works in and through my marriage.
Let's face it, marriage is tough. In the midst of parental sleep deprivation, differing opinions, occasional hangryness or high temperatures with no AC, married life can feel like an uncomfortable fit. Similar to my wedding ring on my skinnier finger, we sometimes feel like in our relationship we are ready to 'fly off the handle' towards one another.
Thank goodness for Jesus. Not only is my promise ring the only thing keeping my wedding band on, Jesus is the only thing that keeps our marriage strong. I would love to deny it, but we are two imperfect people in many ways, yet love requires selflessness, patience, kindness, gentleness, and the such. When we fall short, it is Jesus that holds our shiz together. I love the ways God sends me reminders and illustrations of His faithfulness, such as this.
I love this! I hope you get that wedding ring fixed soon though too :)
ReplyDeleteDid my post go? Well I'll say it again. Thanks so much Rachael for sharing this and your other post about fingers, lacking digits, and prayer. You always see God's hand in every little thing! Pun for you!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should have been a preacher. ;)
