Ok wow! Genesis is really picking up in this chapter. As I read about Abram rescuing Lot, I couldn't help but wonder,"Why isn't there a movie about this yet?"
As told by Rachael:
Once upon a time, every city had a king. One of these kings was known to be very powerful. His name was Kedorlaomer. He had ruled for twelve years over many other kings, making them pay him tribute. The thirteenth year, however, five other kings decided that they were done paying Kedorlaomer and rebelled. They were kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Bela. They joined forces in the Valley of Siddim, which is now known as the Dead Sea.
Kedorlaomer did not like this at all. He gathered three other kings, defeated many other cities and then went to the Valley of Siddim for battle. It was four kings against five, yet Kedorlaomer won. The other kings fled, falling in tar pits or fleeing to the hills. Meanwhile, the victorious four kings gathered all the goods, people and food and left.
If you remember, our dear friend Lot, had chosen to pick his tents just outside of Sodom. He too was gathered, and carried off with the winning kings. In the heat and confusion of the capture, one of the men escaped! He ran as fast as he could to the Trees of Mamre, to tell Abram what happened.
When Abram heard, he quickly gathered 318 of his men and they set out to rescue Lot. It was a long pursuit, leading them north of Damascas, but finally they caught up to Kedorlaomer and attacked! They incredibly recovered all of the goods and all of the people, including Lot.
A priest and kind named Melchizedek came and blessed the brave Abram, also reminding him that his victory was from the Lord. Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
The king of Sodom came up and told Abram that he could keep all of the goods from Sodom, as long as he gave back the people from Sodom. Abram refused to take anything though, because he promised God that he would not accept anything, other than what his men had already eaten. Abram didn't want the ungodly king to ever be able to claim he had made Abram rich, when it was God that gave Abram all he had. He did ask however, that the men who accompanied him would be given their share.
The end
